APHPN backs FG on sept 22 resumption date

The Association of Public Health Physicians of
Nigeria has supported the Federal Government’s
position to reopen public and private primary and
secondary schools in the country on September
22.
In a statement signed by its National Chairman,
Prof. Tanimola Akande, and Secretary-General,
Mr. Sunday Aderibigbe which was made available
to our correspondent in Ilorin on Friday, it said
there is no evidence of an ongoing and
uncontrolled transmission of Ebola in Nigerian
communities. It added that Nigeria has managed
to control the disease.

It said, “APHPN supports government position to
reopen schools from the September 22, 2014 and
at the same time urge various levels of
government to put in place measures to prevent
any new case of Ebola in the country in and out of
schools.”
It reassured parents, teachers and students that
the risk of Ebola outbreak in the schools is very
minimal if at all. APHPN however, encouraged all
stakeholders to maintain vigilance and to do all
possible to provide better infrastructure in the
schools.
It stated that the Ebola outbreak is no doubt an
eye opener on the need to improve on school
health services in Nigeria.
APHPN added that the provision of necessary
infrastructure should start now but should not
prevent the resumption of schools given the time
it will take.
